Dede Ayew Struggles to Play Amputee Football With Crutches During Black Challenge Training
Former Black Stars captain André Dede Ayew has joined Ghana’s Amputee National Team, the Black Challenge, during a training session, attempting to replicate how the players use crutches to move around and play football, but found the exercise surprisingly difficult.
Ayew participated in the training session as he interacted with the players and tried to experience some of the physical demands involved in their style of play, offering a glimpse into the challenges faced by the team as they prepare for their upcoming international assignment.
The former national team captain attempted to use crutches in a similar manner to the amputee footballers, but the exercise proved more difficult than he might have anticipated, highlighting the coordination, balance and strength required to participate in the sport.
Amputee football requires players to demonstrate exceptional control and agility while relying on crutches for movement, with outfield players using their arms and upper-body strength to maintain balance, move across the pitch and compete for possession.
Unlike conventional football, where players rely on their legs for movement and ball control, amputee football demands a different combination of physical skills, making training and familiarity with the equipment essential for effective performance.
Ayew’s attempt to replicate the players’ movements offered him an opportunity to experience some of these demands firsthand, even as the exercise demonstrated that the techniques involved require considerable practice and adaptation.
The Black Challenge represents Ghana in amputee football competitions, with its players working to maintain the standards required to compete against teams from other countries. Their participation in international tournaments also provides an opportunity to showcase their abilities and demonstrate the competitive nature of amputee football.
Ayew’s interaction with the team reflects the support that established figures in Ghanaian football can offer athletes competing in different categories of the sport.
His willingness to join the training session and attempt the movements himself also provided an opportunity to appreciate the effort required to play amputee football.
The session comes as the Black Challenge prepares for the 2026 WAFF World Cup in Mexico, where the team will represent Ghana and seek to perform well against its international opponents.
For Ayew, the experience offered a practical lesson in the demands of a different form of football, while the players had the opportunity to share their training environment with one of Ghana’s most recognisable footballers.
His attempt to play using crutches demonstrated just how challenging the sport can be for someone unfamiliar with its techniques, while the Black Challenge players continue to prepare for the responsibility of representing Ghana on the international stage.
