Galaxy Finally Meet Chiefs’ ‘Lion’ Face-to-Face After Bold Donkey Taunt

TS Galaxy will finally meet Kaizer Chiefs’ famous “lion” face-to-face tonight. The Rockets have already sent a clear message off the pitch, challenging the Soweto giants’ traditional lion-hearted image ahead of their Carling Knockout Cup Round of 16 clash at FNB Stadium.

After the cup draw, Galaxy’s social media team posted a graphic that quickly caught attention across South African football. It showed a donkey wearing the Kaizer Chiefs crest looking into a mirror. In the reflection, the animal appeared as a fierce lion. The caption read “Sonke sinamaphupho,” which means “We all have dreams” in isiZulu.

The point was sharp and direct. Galaxy suggested that while Chiefs see themselves as a powerful force, their reputation may not always match the reality on the field. The post stayed up even after it drew a reaction from the Amakhosi camp in Naturena.

TS Galaxy chairman Tim Sukazi later revealed what happened. He was busy with his law practice when he checked his phone and found a WhatsApp message from Chiefs marketing director Jessica Motaung. There were no words in the message, only a screenshot of the donkey-and-lion graphic and three question marks.

Sukazi chose not to take the post down. He described it as banter and said dreams can come true. “It depends on the beholder,” he explained. “Some may have preferred to see the logo on the lion’s head.” He noted that another post aimed at Orlando Pirates had crossed the line and was removed, but this one stayed within acceptable boundaries.

Galaxy have already shown they can trouble Chiefs in cup matches. The Rockets beat them 1-0 in both the 2019 and 2022 Nedbank Cup encounters. Tonight’s game therefore carries extra meaning for both sides.

Chiefs, under coach Fernando da Cruz, will look to bounce back after their recent CAF Confederation Cup exit. Kick-off is at 19:00 at FNB Stadium. For Galaxy, the fixture offers a chance to turn their social media challenge into something real. For Chiefs, it is a moment to prove that the lion still has teeth.

The banter has added spice to an already important cup tie. Whether the donkey’s dream or the lion’s roar wins the night will be decided on the pitch. Fans from both camps will be watching closely to see which story continues after the final whistle.
