MP Mutuse Reveals the Fear Behind UDA’s Decision to Stop Distributing Caps and T-Shirts in Ukambani
Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse has disclosed that the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) stopped distributing branded caps, T-shirts, and scarves during President William Ruto’s rallies in the Ukambani region. He said the decision was taken after incidents in which party merchandise was allegedly burnt in Kaiti and Mbooni constituencies of Makueni County.
Mutuse claimed that the burning was politically motivated and linked the mobilization of residents to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who has been holding separate political meetings across the country. He explained that the party could not continue issuing materials only for them to be destroyed, noting that resources had been invested in producing and distributing the items.
President Ruto has been conducting rallies nationwide as part of his development tour, where UDA merchandise is usually handed out to supporters. However, Mutuse said the Ukambani experience forced the party to reconsider its approach, fearing further losses and embarrassment.
The MP alleged that after rallies in the region, individuals were mobilized to collect and burn the branded items as a political statement. He argued that such acts undermine tolerance and respect for political diversity, stressing that parties should compete peacefully without intimidation.
The burning of political party merchandise has previously sparked debate in Kenya, with analysts warning that it erodes democratic values and freedom of association. Calls have been made for leaders to promote issue-based politics rather than symbolic acts of rivalry.
By the time of publishing, Gachagua had not publicly responded to Mutuse’s claims. Meanwhile, residents in Ukambani continue to demand development-focused politics that address pressing challenges such as water scarcity, infrastructure gaps, and youth unemployment.
