DVLA to revoke licenses of drivers who accumulate six traffic tickets within two years

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) is planning to revoke the licences of drivers who accumulate six traffic violation tickets within two years, with affected motorists required to undergo retraining before they can obtain new licences.

DVLA Chief Executive Officer Julius Neequaye Kotey disclosed the proposed measure while speaking about the authority’s plans to strengthen driver training and improve road safety.

According to him, drivers who repeatedly violate traffic regulations and receive six tickets within the two-year period will have their licences withdrawn and will be required to return to the DVLA for retraining and re-issuance of their licences.

“We will seize your licence from you six times within two years. We will seize your licence from you and account for retraining and re-issuance of the driver’s licence,” Mr Kotey said.

He explained that the measure would make repeat traffic offenders undergo additional training before they are allowed to return to the road.

The announcement comes as the DVLA prepares to launch its Skills Development Centre, an initiative expected to strengthen driver education and skills development.

The proposed sanctions would place greater emphasis on driver competence and accountability, particularly for motorists who repeatedly breach traffic rules.

However, details on when the measure will take effect, how the six-ticket threshold will be administered and the specific retraining requirements have not yet been provided.
