Ebola: NCDC Breaks Silence, Reveals Real Reason Index Patient Was Evacuated To Switzerland
According to a report by The Vanguard on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has broken its silence over the recent evacuation of the country’s Ebola index patient to Switzerland, firmly rejecting claims that the move signals a vote of no confidence in Nigeria’s medical system.
Speaking in Abuja during a capacity-building workshop for journalists, NCDC Director-General Dr Jide Idris explained that the patient, who arrived from Uganda, was predominantly managed by Nigerian clinicians and left the country in a stable condition after showing clinical improvement in isolation.
Dr Idris also slammed attempts to politicize the health emergency, dismissing online narratives alleging that the incident is a ploy to trigger lockdowns, restrict movement, or disrupt the upcoming 2027 general elections.
He cautioned against premature reports declaring Nigeria entirely Ebola-free, stressing that such claims dangerously lower public vigilance, stop people from washing hands, and halt calls to the emergency hotline.
Addressing public criticism, the NCDC boss clarified that the weekly 100,000 naira welfare stipend given to quarantined individuals is strictly to cushion financial pressures during isolation, not cash handouts for having the virus.
He further defended the decision to withhold the identities of the patient and contacts, noting that public exposure would drive individuals into hiding and spark an outbreak.
Currently, 53 primary contacts remain under close daily observation, with three who showed symptoms testing negative.
The agency announced that a strict 42-day countdown has commenced, with December 7 marked as the earliest date to declare the outbreak cleared if no fresh cases emerge.
While welcoming public scrutiny and accountability regarding government preparedness, Dr Idris urged media practitioners to verify facts, avoid sensationalism, and rely on official NCDC channels to prevent mass panic.
