Itumeleng Khune Gives Verdict on Whether Elias Mokwana Is the Right Signing for Kaizer Chiefs

Former Kaizer Chiefs captain Itumeleng Khune has urged the Soweto giants to consider signing South African international winger Elias Mokwana, insisting that the attacker has the qualities needed to strengthen the team.

Khune believes Mokwana could bring creativity, attacking ability and valuable experience to Amakhosi as the club continues to improve its squad under head coach Fernando da Cruz.

According to a report published by SABC Sport on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, Mokwana has been offered to Kaizer Chiefs by his representatives following his departure from Tunisian club Espérance de Tunis.

The 27-year-old is currently a free agent after ending his association with the Tunisian giants in September. A proposed move to Moroccan club Wydad Athletic Club reportedly collapsed because of registration issues, leaving the Bafana Bafana international searching for another opportunity.

Khune believes Chiefs should take advantage of the situation and consider bringing the winger back to South African football.

Speaking about the possible signing, the former Chiefs captain compared Mokwana’s playing style to that of former Amakhosi favourite Jabu ‘Shuffle’ Mahlangu, highlighting his confidence and ability to take on defenders.

“Mokwana reminds me of Jabu ‘Shuffle’ back then because he is very skilful and he is not afraid to take on his defender,” Khune said, as quoted by SABC Sport.

He added that the winger’s ability to create chances and score goals could make him a valuable addition to the squad. Khune also pointed to Mokwana’s experience in continental football, suggesting that younger players at Chiefs could learn from him.

The former goalkeeper’s comments come as Amakhosi continue to assess their attacking options and look for ways to improve their performances.

Mokwana established himself as an exciting attacking player during his time with Sekhukhune United, earning a move to Espérance in 2024. He later spent time on loan at Saudi Arabian club Al-Hazem before his departure from the Tunisian side.

During his spell abroad, the winger gained experience in different football environments, which could benefit Chiefs if a deal eventually materialises.

Former Jomo Cosmos midfielder and football analyst Mark Haskins has also backed the possibility of Mokwana joining one of South Africa’s leading clubs.

Haskins believes the winger possesses the quality to improve the Chiefs squad and expressed surprise that more local giants had not pursued him before his move overseas.
