Sifuna Wins Big As Another Top Opposition Party Endorses Him For Presidency In 2027

KANU has declared its support for Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s 2027 presidential bid, with the party also announcing plans to avoid fielding candidates for parliamentary and ward positions in Nairobi to prevent competition within the Linda Mwananchi movement.

The announcement was made by KANU spokesperson Tony Gachoka during an interview on Radio Generation’s The People’s Breakfast programme on Monday, October 26, 2026. Gachoka, who is also eyeing the Nairobi gubernatorial seat, said the party and its leader, Gideon Moi, had agreed to support Sifuna’s presidential ambitions.

Gachoka explained that KANU would not field Members of Parliament or Members of County Assembly in Nairobi where Sifuna’s political outfit would be competing. He argued that the decision was intended to consolidate support for the movement rather than divide voters among candidates aligned with the same political camp.

“My party, Ya Chama Na Mama and Honourable Gideon Moi support unequivocally Edwin Sifuna to be the president of Kenya. We will not compete with Sifuna where he is running candidates,” Gachoka stated.

He added that building a strong political base would give Sifuna greater leverage when engaging other opposition leaders in discussions about possible cooperation ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Among the opposition figures mentioned were former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, whose political formations have also featured in discussions surrounding a possible opposition alliance.

Gachoka said Sifuna needed sufficient political backing before entering negotiations with other leaders, arguing that a candidate with an established support base would be better positioned to participate in coalition discussions.

The KANU spokesperson also challenged supporters in Luo Nyanza to demonstrate their commitment to Sifuna rather than divide their political allegiance between the senator’s camp and the ODM faction led by Oburu Oginga.

He questioned how supporters could oppose President William Ruto while simultaneously backing rival political formations with different approaches to the current political establishment.

Gachoka further urged young Kenyans who actively support the movement on social media to turn their online activities into practical political mobilisation and alliances.

Under Kenya’s presidential election rules, a candidate must secure more than half of all votes cast and at least 25 per cent of the votes in at least 24 of the country’s 47 counties to win in the first round.

The endorsement comes as opposition leaders and political movements position themselves ahead of the 2027 elections, with questions remaining about how different factions will coordinate their candidates and negotiate possible alliances.
