Mark Kiptoo Breaks Over-50 Marathon World Record in Frankfurt
Veteran Kenyan runner Mark Kiptoo has made history after breaking the over-50 marathon world record at the Frankfurt Marathon in Germany on Sunday, October 25, 2026.
The 50-year-old clocked an impressive 2 hours, 15 minutes and 24 seconds to set a new benchmark for male runners aged 50 and above. He finished 13th overall in the race, showing that age has not slowed his ability to compete at the highest level.
Kiptoo shattered the previous record of 2:19:29, set by South African runner Titus Mamabolo in Durban in 1991. His performance improved the long-standing mark by more than four minutes.
The achievement came only three weeks after the Kenyan set a new over-50 best in the half marathon at the San SebastiΓ‘n Half Marathon in Spain on October 4. He completed the 21.1-kilometre race in 1:03:57, further proving his remarkable form at the age of 50.
Speaking about his continued success, Kiptoo said running was more than a sport to him, describing it as a way of life. He also highlighted the importance of inspiring other people through his performances.
“I take running as a way of life and enjoy the many benefits of also inspiring someone, and breaking the record has given me more reasons to keep going,” he said.
Kiptoo has enjoyed a long and successful career in athletics, competing in track events, cross-country races and marathons. He won the Frankfurt Marathon in 2014 and has continued to perform strongly despite challenges, including Achilles tendon problems that affected his training.
His latest achievement adds to his reputation as one of Kenya’s most remarkable veteran distance runners. While many athletes reduce their competitive activities as they grow older, Kiptoo continues to challenge himself against younger competitors.
The Frankfurt performance was particularly impressive because the race took place in rainy and windy conditions, making the challenge even tougher for the runners.
However, the marathon record still requires formal approval from World Masters Athletics before it can be recognised as an official world record.
Kiptoo’s achievement is expected to inspire athletes and fitness enthusiasts, especially those who believe age limits their ability to pursue sporting ambitions.
His recent performances show that discipline, consistency and determination can help athletes remain competitive well into their later years.
