Wontumi proposes private rooms in prisons for inmates to have fun with their wives

According to report by Ghbase on Tuesday 27, October 2026, former Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has reportedly proposed the introduction of private facilities in Ghanaian prisons to allow married inmates to spend intimate time with their spouses during scheduled visits.

The proposal was disclosed by broadcast journalist Kwame Tanko of Lawson Media following his visit to Wontumi at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison, where the politician is reportedly serving a sentence.

According to Tanko, Wontumi believes that although individuals are incarcerated for various offences, imprisonment does not eliminate their natural, emotional and marital needs. He is therefore said to have suggested that prison authorities consider setting up designated hostels or private cabins where married inmates could meet their spouses under approved conditions.

The proposed arrangement would allow eligible inmates to spend private time with their legally married partners during scheduled visits, subject to appropriate security measures and prison regulations.

Tanko further disclosed that Wontumi reportedly linked his proposal to concerns about alleged same-sex sexual activity within Ghanaian prisons. He argued that providing married inmates with opportunities for private visits with their spouses could help address some of the concerns he raised.

However, the proposal, as reported by Tanko, would require careful consideration by the relevant authorities, particularly regarding prison security, inmate eligibility, public health, supervision and the rights of prisoners.

The suggestion also raises broader questions about the purpose of incarceration and whether prison systems should make provisions for maintaining family relationships and marital connections while ensuring discipline and security.

Conjugal visits, where permitted, generally involve arrangements that allow inmates to spend private time with their spouses or partners under specific rules. However, such visits are not universally available and depend on the laws, policies and administrative practices of individual jurisdictions.

It remains unclear whether Ghana’s prison authorities will consider Chairman Wontumi’s reported proposal or whether any formal discussions have taken place regarding the introduction of dedicated facilities for conjugal visits.

For now, the proposal has brought attention to the conditions of incarceration and the debate over how correctional facilities can balance security, rehabilitation and the personal needs of inmates.
