EFF Spy Scandal: Court Hears Claims of Secret Operation Targeting Malema and His Party
Allegations of a covert intelligence operation targeting the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have emerged during court proceedings involving the alleged theft of R12 million in classified state funds.
According to testimony from a mystery witness, former ANC security chief Tito Maleka was allegedly involved in a scheme known as Project Mayibuye, which reportedly aimed to infiltrate the EFF and monitor its leader, Julius Malema.
The alleged operation dates back to 2015 and 2016, when intelligence operatives were reportedly paid millions of rands in cash to gather information on the red berets. The witness also claimed that efforts were made to persuade key EFF members to abandon the party and return to the ANC.
Former State Security Minister David Mahlobo was also reportedly linked to the allegations, with claims that secret meetings were held at his private residence to discuss and approve aspects of the operation.
Maleka, who was named in connection with the alleged scheme, died in July 2024.
The revelations have reportedly angered the EFF, which has condemned the alleged use of public funds to conduct surveillance against a political organisation.
The party has announced plans to open criminal cases against those allegedly involved, seeking accountability over the claims.
The allegations have raised serious questions about intelligence oversight, political interference and the handling of classified public funds.
However, the claims remain allegations presented in court, and the responsibility of the individuals named must be determined through the appropriate legal processes.
