President William Ruto Announces Big Plan to Open First Ever Mega Project During His Key Event

President William Ruto has announced plans to launch Kenya’s first iron production plant in Taita Taveta County within the next three weeks.

Ruto made the announcement on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, during the groundbreaking ceremony for a clinker production plant in Ngaaie, Kitui County.

He said a local investor was spearheading the project, which will use locally sourced iron ore to support the country’s manufacturing industry.

The President added that he would personally attend the launch, describing the facility as a step towards reducing Kenya’s reliance on imported raw materials.

Ruto said the plant would allow Kenya to produce iron from its own mineral resources instead of importing it from other countries.

He also pledged to protect investors from political interference, warning that disputes and other disruptions could discourage businesses from investing in Kenya.

During the event, he referred to legal disputes involving Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote while defending his administration’s efforts to attract investment.

The announcement comes as the government pursues plans to expand local mineral processing, including in Magadi, Kajiado County, where mining operations have faced uncertainty.

In September, Ruto announced plans to re-advertise the Magadi mining contract, allowing more investors to compete for rights to exploit the area’s mineral resources.

On Tuesday, he directed the Ministry of Mining to award contracts to companies willing to process minerals locally instead of exporting raw materials.

He specifically warned against exporting raw soda ash, saying mining agreements should encourage local industries that add value to minerals before they reach the market.

On September 5, Ruto said the government could allow up to 10 companies to undertake mining activities in Magadi.

He said successful bidders would be required to establish processing facilities, including glass and chemical factories, as part of the government’s industrialisation plans.
