Details of Letter Babu Owino Has Wrote to Governor Sakaja as He Threatens to Take Him to Court

Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has challenged Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja to take him to court following a dispute over the building that collapsed in Eastleigh, Nairobi.

Owino has refused to withdraw his remarks about the governor and says he is ready to question him in court over the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

In a statement shared on social media on Monday, October 26, 2026, the legislator responded to a demand letter sent by Sakaja’s lawyers. The lawyers had given him six hours to remove posts they said contained misleading and defamatory claims about the governor.

Owino dismissed the demand and said he was prepared to face the governor in court. He also threatened to cross-examine Sakaja for seven hours straight if the matter proceeds to trial.

The disagreement follows the collapse of a multi-storey building in Eastleigh on Friday, October 23, which raised questions about construction approvals and the enforcement of building regulations in Nairobi.

Owino has accused Sakaja of misleading Kenyans about whether the county approved the construction. The MP shared a document that he says shows that approval was granted in February 2024. He also alleged that a bribe of KSh120 million was paid in connection with the approval. The bribery allegation has not been independently verified.

Sakaja, however, has disputed the claims and questioned the authenticity of the document shared online. The governor says the county approved a change in the property’s use from residential to residential and commercial, but did not approve the construction of the high-rise building.

He has maintained that the developer continued with construction despite enforcement action by county officials.

The dispute has increased pressure on authorities to explain how the building was allowed to rise and whether the required approvals and safety checks were carried out.

The collapse triggered a rescue operation involving several emergency agencies as teams searched for people feared trapped beneath the rubble. The incident also renewed calls for stronger oversight of construction projects in the capital.
