Bad News for ODM as Unexpected News Emerges Days After Oburu’s Hospital Discharge

Homa Bay politician Newton Ogada has announced his departure from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), revealing plans to seek the Kasipul parliamentary seat through The Mwananchi Party ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Ogada, a former aspirant for the Kasipul parliamentary position, made the announcement on Monday, October 26, 2026, as political leaders across Kenya continue exploring new parties and alliances before the next electoral contest.

The politician identified The Mwananchi Party, associated with Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, as his preferred platform for pursuing his political ambitions. He also indicated that he would remain involved in the broader Linda Mwananchi movement, which has attracted leaders advocating changes in the country’s political leadership.

In addition to announcing his new political direction, Ogada appealed to leaders from the Luo community to unite under a single, influential political party instead of dividing their support among several competing organisations.

His exit from ODM follows a disagreement over the party’s nomination process during the 2025 Kasipul parliamentary by-election. Ogada alleged that the exercise was unfair, maintaining that he had won the contest but was denied the opportunity to represent the party.

ODM ultimately supported Boyd Were, who secured victory in the by-election following the death of his father, former Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were.

Ogada further claimed that the political contest resulted in attacks on his property, alleging that nine vehicles and a hospital were vandalised. These allegations have not been independently verified.

The former aspirant reportedly expressed disappointment with ODM after approximately two decades of supporting the party. He also criticised its current leadership, arguing that the organisation had moved away from the democratic principles associated with its founding leader, the late Raila Odinga.

Ogada’s decision comes as members of the Linda Mwananchi movement work to strengthen their political presence ahead of the 2027 elections. Babu Owino and other leaders associated with the movement have continued attracting attention as discussions about alternative political platforms gather momentum.
