Saka received the honour in recognition of his charitable work, including funding 120 surgical operations for children in Nigeria through his partnership with German charity BigShoe.

The initiative provided medical treatment for vulnerable children suffering from various health conditions, including hernias and brain tumours, offering them access to potentially life-changing procedures.

The project also reflects the Arsenal forward’s connection to Nigeria, where his parents originate, and his commitment to supporting disadvantaged children through improved access to healthcare.

The Socrates Award recognises footballers and other prominent personalities who use their influence to support humanitarian causes and create positive social change beyond their professional careers.

France Football magazine and the Peace and Sport organisation jointly present the award during the annual Ballon d’Or ceremony, highlighting initiatives that promote areas such as healthcare, education and social development.

Introduced in 2022, the award is named after Brazilian football legend Socrates, who was celebrated for his achievements on the pitch as well as his activism and advocacy for democracy.

Saka’s recognition highlights the growing role of football personalities in humanitarian work, with his support for children in Nigeria demonstrating how their influence can help address important social and healthcare needs.
