Ghana to Block IP Addresses Used for Illegal DStv Streaming as Sam George Awaits AG’s Approval

The government is awaiting final legal clearance from the Attorney-General before implementing measures to block internet protocol (IP) addresses linked to illegal pay-TV streaming services as part of efforts to intensify its crackdown on piracy.

Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, said the technical preparations for the proposed enforcement measures had been completed, with the remaining steps focused on ensuring that the actions comply with the law.

Speaking at a joint press briefing with Canal+ and MultiChoice Ghana on Monday, October 26, the minister indicated that the government was preparing to move beyond efforts to make subscriptions more affordable and begin enforcing restrictions against unauthorised access to pay-TV content.

He explained that the National Communications Authority (NCA) and the Cyber Security Authority had reviewed the proposed measures, including the blocking of IP addresses associated with illegal streaming activities.

According to the minister, the technical framework needed to implement the intervention was ready, but the government wanted the Attorney-General’s approval before proceeding to avoid potential legal complications.

“We’ve put in place the mechanism to be able to deal with those ramifications and we just need the AG’s all clear,” the Minister said.

The planned crackdown follows the government’s engagement with Canal+ and MultiChoice Ghana, operators of DStv, which has resulted in the introduction of four revised subscription packages.

The new packages are scheduled to take effect on November 5, with monthly fees ranging from GH¢50 to GH¢570.
