Ambassador Jane Gasu Aheto Urges Women Leaders to Create Opportunities for Others
Share on Twitter The Deputy Head of Mission at Ghana’s Embassy in Washington, D.C., Ambassador Mrs. Jane Gasu Aheto, has called on women in leadership positions to use their influence to create opportunities for others and drive meaningful change in their communities.
She stressed that leadership should go beyond occupying positions of authority to include empowering others, opening doors for the less privileged and building a legacy that benefits future generations.
“Leadership is not merely a title; it is the courage to create change and the generosity to open doors for others,” Ambassador Gasu Aheto said.
She made the remarks at an event organised by HERealExperience Global Incorporated at Hartwood Mansion in West Virginia, United States, to honour women whose achievements and contributions have made a difference in their communities and whose influence continues to create opportunities for others.
The event was held under the theme, “Honouring Impact. Celebrating Excellence. Building Legacy.”
Ambassador Gasu Aheto was honoured for her contributions to diplomatic leadership and global impact, while Mrs. Florence Torson-Hart, President of the US-Ghana Chamber of Commerce in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was recognised for her role in diaspora business leadership and economic advancement.
African Diaspora Urged to Build Strategic Partnerships
Ambassador Gasu Aheto also challenged the African diaspora to play an active role in advancing women’s empowerment and development through strategic partnerships and collaboration.
She encouraged closer engagement with HERealExperience, women’s organisations, businesses, educational institutions and diaspora networks to strengthen connections between Ghana, the United States and the wider world.
According to her, such partnerships could create opportunities in entrepreneurship, technology, investment, education, mentorship and cultural exchange.
She emphasised that collaboration among these institutions and networks could help women expand their reach, develop their potential and contribute more significantly to economic and social development.
The Ambassador’s message underscored the importance of building bridges between communities and leveraging the expertise, resources and experiences of the diaspora to support development initiatives.
Ghanaian Women Have Always Driven Progress
Reflecting on the contributions of Ghanaian women to national development, Ambassador Gasu Aheto highlighted the achievements of historical figures whose courage, leadership and creativity helped shape the country’s history.
She cited Yaa Asantewaa, remembered for her bravery and resistance against British colonial rule; Hannah Cudjoe, whose political mobilisation contributed to Ghana’s independence struggle; and Theodosia Okoh, the designer of Ghana’s national flag.
She noted that the contributions of women to national development extend beyond prominent historical figures to include women working across different sectors of the economy and society.
“From market women sustaining local economies to women leading in politics, business, education, and public service, Ghanaian women have always been architects of progress,” she said.
Her remarks highlighted the need to recognise women’s contributions while creating an environment in which more women can access leadership opportunities and make meaningful contributions to society.
Celebrating Leadership and Lasting Impact
The recognition of Ambassador Gasu Aheto and Mrs. Torson-Hart formed part of the event’s broader effort to celebrate women whose achievements demonstrate the importance of leadership, service and community development.
While Ambassador Gasu Aheto was recognised for her diplomatic leadership and global impact, Mrs. Torson-Hart’s award acknowledged her contribution to diaspora business leadership and economic advancement.
The event brought attention to the role women leaders can play in strengthening international relationships, promoting economic cooperation and inspiring others through their achievements.
Ambassador Gasu Aheto’s message served as a reminder that the value of leadership lies not only in personal accomplishments but also in the opportunities leaders create for others and the positive impact they leave behind.
