Mahama Congratulates Lula on Re-election
President John Dramani Mahama has congratulated Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on his re-election, expressing his commitment to strengthening diplomatic and economic ties between Ghana and Brazil while promoting the shared interests of countries in the Global South.
In a Facebook post, Mahama described Lula’s electoral victory as well-deserved and highlighted the longstanding historical connections between the two countries.
He also expressed optimism about expanding bilateral cooperation through the Accra Reset initiative to advance development and improve the welfare of their populations.
Mahama’s congratulatory message followed Brazil’s presidential runoff election held on Sunday, October 25, 2026, in which Lula defeated his challenger, Flávio Bolsonaro of the Liberal Party, to secure another term in office.
Official results released by Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court indicated that Lula obtained 51.79 per cent of the valid votes, equivalent to 64,256,232 votes.
Bolsonaro secured 48.21 per cent, representing 59,826,041 votes.
The victory marks another milestone in Lula’s political career, securing a further presidential term for the 80-year-old leader, who returned to power in 2023 after previously serving as Brazil’s president from 2003 to 2010.
