Obuasi SHTS Scandal: Students Withdraw – Minister Reveals
Gender Minister Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey said two or three students linked to the incidents at Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS) have withdrawn after media reports mentioned their full names.
Speaking to the media during a visit to the school on Monday, October 26, 2026, Dr Lartey said the publicity had made some parents reluctant to continue engaging with authorities.
“One of the challenges we’ve had engaging the victims is that the media has not helped the case,” she said.
The minister explained that some students were identified after a media station mentioned their full names, making it harder for officials to engage the affected families.
“Two or three of the students have had to withdraw because they heard their names being mentioned,” she said. “Their full names were mentioned on one of the media stations, and because of that, the parents are reluctant to engage further.”
Dr Lartey urged journalists to exercise restraint when reporting on the students, stressing that the pursuit of news should not come at the expense of the affected children’s privacy and well-being.
“These are the lives of people, lived realities and experiences of people,” she said.
She also warned that concealing a student’s face might not be enough to protect their identity, as friends and family members could recognise their voice.
“Even when their faces were covered, some friends and family members were able to identify their voices, and it is going against them,” she said.
According to the minister, these reports made it harder to engage victims and their families.
She reminded journalists that the process involved several parties and that one group’s actions could affect others’ ability to reach a resolution.
“If one system fails, it is not just that system, but all of us who depend on that system to ensure that we come to a conclusive end or we seek justice for victims will all be affected one way or the other,” she said.
Dr Lartey appealed to the media to handle the matter with care so students and their families feel safe enough to participate in the process.
