Reactions As Newspaper Organization Fact Checks Bread Branded With Peter Obi’s Image
Social media users have expressed different opinions following a fact-check of a viral photograph allegedly showing Peter Obi, former Anambra State governor and presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), distributing bread to attract votes ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to a report published on the official X account of Daily Trust on Monday, October 26, 2026, the claim that Obi distributed bread bearing his image as part of his political campaign is false.
The fact-checking report explained that the photograph circulating online had been altered to associate the bread with Obi. According to the report, the original image featured the face of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the branding of the All Progressives Congress (APC), rather than that of the former Anambra governor.
The development comes as political activities gradually intensify ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, with politicians and political parties preparing to seek public support.
The circulation of misleading images and claims on social media has continued to raise concerns about the spread of political misinformation, particularly as voters increasingly rely on online platforms for information about candidates and political developments.
Following the publication of the fact-check, several social media users reacted to the report, sharing their opinions about the viral photograph and the clarification provided by Daily Trust.
