Today’s Headlines:2027: Tinubu deserves second term, showed courage previous governments lacked — Wike;Sanusi Advocate Govt Intervention for food security
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared that President Bola Tinubu deserves a second term in office, citing his decision to remove the petrol subsidy as evidence of the courage he said previous administrations lacked.
Wike made the declaration on Monday at a Rainbow Coalition stakeholders’ town hall meeting in Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State, where he urged residents to support Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027 and candidates endorsed by the coalition.
The minister acknowledged the economic hardship Nigerians were experiencing following the removal of the petrol subsidy but argued that the reform had increased revenue available to state and local governments, providing them with greater resources to meet their obligations.
According to him, Nigeria needs leaders who can take difficult and unpopular decisions in the country’s long-term interest rather than succumb to criticism.
Former President of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo, has called on the government of Nigeria to expedite action towards restoring peace to farming communities troubled by insecurity saying that insecurity has a negative impact on the country’s food production capacity.
He made these remarks while delivering his address at the 2026 AgriConnectX Summit held in Lagos over the weekend.
According to him, the challenge of insecurity in farming communities rests on the government to address so as to ensure that farmers can peacefully cultivate food for the Nigerian public.
Today, farmers are in pain in some parts of the country because of insecurity. Some have abandoned their farms. Some are still crying, hoping that when they are producing their crops, some people will not come at gun point and take their crops away.
The 13th edition of the Financial Times Africa Summit brought together African and international leaders, policymakers, business executives, investors and other influential stakeholders to discuss the continent’s economic prospects, investment opportunities, political leadership and development challenges.
This year’s high-profile gathering featured such eminent personalities as Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama; Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote; Kirsty McNeill, the UK minister for international development; Taiwo Oyedele, Nigeria’s minister of finance and coordinating minister of the economy, among other distinguished participants.
I also attended the event as a senior media professional, where, before a distinguished international audience, I witnessed former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo lay bare Nigeria’s economic predicament under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. What struck me was not merely the bluntness of his remarks but also the agreement they attracted from many of the dignitaries present. Obasanjo had articulated what millions of Nigerians have been saying at home:
the country is in distress, and the Tinubu administration has yet to convince them that its economic reforms are delivering meaningful relief.
