“We’ll Work Hard To Stem The Trend Of Japa So We’ve People Coming Back To Serve In Our Region”–PBAT
According to a report by The Punch, on Monday, October 26, 2026, President Bola Tinubu has pledged to intensify efforts to reduce the migration of Nigerian medical professionals abroad and encourage skilled healthcare workers to return home and contribute to the country’s health sector.
Tinubu made the pledge in Abuja during the opening and induction ceremony of the 50th Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference of the West African College of Physicians.
The President, represented by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Ali Pate, said the Federal Government would work towards reversing the growing departure of healthcare professionals in search of better salaries, improved working conditions and career advancement opportunities overseas.
Tinubu stated, “We will work hard to stem the trend of Japa so that we have the people coming back to serve in our region.”
The remarks came as concerns continued over the impact of healthcare worker migration on Nigeria’s medical facilities and the availability of experienced personnel to provide essential services. The government’s position highlights the importance of retaining qualified professionals and creating conditions that could encourage those working abroad to return.
The President also stressed the need for stronger disease surveillance and cooperation among West African countries to tackle infectious diseases and improve preparedness for public health emergencies.
His comments come amid concerns surrounding the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola reported in parts of Africa. Effective surveillance, information sharing and coordinated responses remain important in identifying infections early and limiting cross-border transmission.
Tinubu reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to working with regional partners to strengthen public health systems and improve responses to disease outbreaks.
The conference, which marked the West African College of Physicians’ 50th anniversary, brought together medical professionals to discuss healthcare delivery, professional training and challenges facing health systems across the region.
The President’s message placed healthcare workforce retention and regional disease prevention at the centre of efforts to improve medical services and protect public health throughout West Africa.
