Mudavadi Arrives in Russia With Major Plans to Open New Markets for Kenyan Products

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has arrived in Moscow, Russia, ahead of a major international summit where Kenya hopes to secure new export markets, attract foreign investment and strengthen economic ties with Russian partners.

Mudavadi, who also serves as Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, arrived on Monday, October 26, 2026, ahead of the Third Russia–Africa Summit and the accompanying Russia–Africa Economic and Humanitarian Forum scheduled for October 28 to 30.

The Kenyan delegation intends to use the high level meetings to pursue economic partnerships that could create opportunities for local businesses, support job creation and strengthen the country’s position in international trade.

According to the Office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary, the discussions will focus on trade, investment, economic development, peace and security, as well as stronger diplomatic relations between African nations and Russia.

One of Kenya’s key priorities is to expand access to the Russian market for locally produced tea, coffee and horticultural products.

The government is also seeking investment opportunities in agriculture, energy, manufacturing, science and technology, education and tourism.

Mudavadi is expected to hold bilateral talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to discuss relations between Nairobi and Moscow and explore areas where both countries can deepen economic cooperation.

The meetings are also expected to examine opportunities for technology transfer, skills development and partnerships that could benefit Kenyan entrepreneurs and young professionals.

Kenya’s renewed engagement with Russia comes as the government seeks to diversify export destinations and attract investment beyond its traditional trading partners.

The two countries already maintain commercial relations, with Kenya exporting agricultural products while importing goods including food products and fertilisers from Russia.

The upcoming summit offers Nairobi an opportunity to pursue a more balanced trading relationship by increasing exports and identifying additional markets for Kenyan businesses.

However, the success of the visit will depend on whether the discussions produce concrete agreements and practical opportunities for businesses.

The Russia–Africa summit series began in Sochi in 2019, followed by a second meeting in St Petersburg in 2023.

Mudavadi’s latest visit forms part of Kenya’s broader economic diplomacy strategy, which seeks to turn international partnerships into investment, export growth and employment opportunities for citizens.
