Mercy Masai officially changes and adopts new name
Kenyan social media personality and aspiring politician Mercy Masai has officially changed her name from Mercy Nashipai Legilisho to Mercy Masai Nashipai Legilisho.
Mercy announced the change on social media after her new name appeared in the Kenya Gazette, asking the public to address her using her newly adopted name.
“You can now address me as MERCY MASAI NASHIPAI LEGILISHO. Officially gazetted. Mbele iko sawa,” Mercy wrote on Monday, October 26,2026.
The notice, published as Gazette Notice No. 16934, confirms that Masai formally renounced her former name and adopted the new one for all purposes.
The notice states that the change was effected through a deed poll dated September 30, 2026, and registered at the Registry of Documents in Nairobi.
“NOTICE is given that by a deed poll dated 30th September, 2026, duly executed and registered in the Registry of Documents at Nairobi as Presentation No. 1226, in Volume DI, Folio 388/3620, File No. MMXXVI, by our client, Mercy Masai Nashipai Legilisho, formerly known as Mercy Nashipai Legilisho,
“Formally and absolutely renounced and abandoned the use of her former name, Mercy Nashipai Legilisho, and in lieu thereof assumed and adopted the name, Mercy Masai Nashipai Legilisho, for all purposes and authorises and requests all persons at all times to designate, describe and address her by her assumed name, Mercy Masai Nashipai Legilisho only,” the notice reads.
In Kenya, a person seeking to change their name through a deed poll must prepare the legal document, have it registered with the Registrar of Documents and have the change published in the Kenya Gazette.
The process formally records the abandonment of the former name and adoption of the new one.
After gazettement, the person can use the relevant documents to apply to update official records, including their national identity card.
