TOR Recovery Created Over 8,000 Jobs for Ghanaians – Edmond Kombat Reveals
The Managing Director of the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR), Edmond Kombat, has disclosed that the refinery’s recovery and restoration programme has generated more than 8,000 direct and indirect jobs for Ghanaians.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Monday, October 26, Kombat said the resumption of operations at the refinery had created employment opportunities for young engineers, temporary workers, local contractors and employees within the downstream petroleum industry.
He disclosed that TOR currently employs 415 young engineers in permanent positions, while 301 temporary workers have been engaged to support its operations.
In addition, 67 workers have been recruited for maintenance activities involving the Residue Fluid Catalytic Cracker (RFCC), while 654 people work with 35 local contractors undertaking various assignments at the refinery.
Kombat explained that the employment figures highlight the broader economic impact of reviving TOR, particularly in providing jobs for young professionals and supporting individuals and businesses whose livelihoods depend on the refinery’s activities.
He added that the restoration programme had also created indirect employment for approximately 6,500 people, including tanker drivers and other workers operating within the downstream petroleum sector.
According to him, the refinery’s return to operations has contributed significantly to job creation, providing employment for thousands of Ghanaians who might otherwise have struggled to find similar opportunities.
Kombat noted that the combined employment opportunities generated through the recovery efforts demonstrate the importance of restoring the refinery’s operations to strengthen livelihoods and support economic activity across the petroleum value chain.
“The recovery has created a number of jobs, and sometimes we wonder where these people would have been if TOR had not come back, In effect, direct employment for 1,557 young Ghanaian engineers having employed as a result of restoration and reset. We’ve also created jobs of about 6,500 indirectly for tanker drivers and other workers in the downstream,” he said.
