South African evacuee claims members were coached to speak against government

A South African evacuee has alleged that some members of the group have received calls and coaching to speak against the government, but said he would not allow political interests to influence their account of events.

He said some evacuees had been helped by Benjam, while media engagements had also given them assurances that they would receive reintegration packages upon their return to Ghana.

“But we are aware that some members of our group have received calls and coaching to speak against the government, but our conscience will not allow us to do so,” he said in a press conference.

The evacuee said political affiliation should not prevent them from stating what they knew to be true, even if they supported the opposition rather than the government.

“Even if we support the opposition party rather than the government of the day, it is only fair that we state the facts and refuse to allow petty politics to make us liars,” he said.

He added that the media had helped the group and assured them, with proof, that reintegration packages would be provided to support their return to society.

The excerpt does not identify who allegedly contacted the evacuees or coached them to speak against the government.
