Gqeberha cop allegedly shoots wife three times before turning service pistol on himself while two children were inside the house
A Gqeberha woman is recovering in hospital after her 49-year-old police officer husband allegedly shot her three times with his service pistol before turning the gun on himself inside their home on Monday morning.
The horrifying domestic shooting unfolded at around 07:00 on 26 October at the couple’s home on Bumbane Street in NU 4A, Ikamvelihle, while two children were inside the house.
According to Eastern Cape police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana, the 49-year-old officer—who was stationed at the Kwazakele police station—died at the scene, while his wife miraculously survived the attack.
“The wife survived the attack and was taken to hospital for treatment. She sustained three gunshot wounds,” Gantana said.

Police confirmed that the officer allegedly used his state-issued service pistol during the shooting. An attempted murder case and an inquest docket have been opened for investigation.
Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Vuyisile Ncata expressed shock over the shooting, sending his well-wishes to the wounded mother and the two children who were inside the house when the gunfire rang out.
“This incident is deeply distressing to us as SAPS, and our thoughts are with the injured wife as she recovers, with the two children who were in the house, and with the family,” Ncata said.
He promised that police management would step in to provide trauma support to the family.
“We recognise the trauma such incidents cause, and management will ensure that counselling and support are made available to those affected,” he said.
Following the tragedy, Ncata made a direct plea to police officers and their families across the province to speak up and get help if they are struggling at home or mentally overwhelmed.
“I also appeal personally to our members and their families: if you are experiencing emotional distress, domestic conflict, or any situation that feels beyond your control, please reach out for help through SAPS wellness services, a trusted colleague or a professional counsellor,” he said.
“Seeking help is a sign of strength, and support is available,” Ncata added.
