Wontumi Is Sick in Prison ā Abronye Accuses NPP Leaders of Concealing His Condition
Kwame Baffoe, widely known as Abronye DC and the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has alleged that former Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly called Chairman Wontumi, is unwell while in prison. He further accused party leaders of hiding information about Wontumi’s health from supporters.
Speaking on Ohia TV, Abronye DC stated emphatically that Chairman Wontumi is sick and warned that anyone claiming otherwise is not telling the truth. He called on NPP followers and supporters to disregard any assurances from party leaders that Wontumi is in good health, insisting that such claims are false.
Abronye extended his warning to information that might come from prison authorities, urging supporters not to believe statements that Wontumi is fine even if such assurances come from official sources. He explained that party leaders may be withholding the truth to prevent supporters from becoming worried, and therefore urged the party’s base to remain skeptical of any claims about Wontumi’s wellbeing.
He further alleged that Wontumi is suffering in custody as a result of what he described as fabricated allegations leveled against him, suggesting that the case against the former Ashanti Regional Chairman is built on falsehoods.
Chairman Wontumi has been held at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison since his conviction in July in a case connected to Akonta Mining Company Limited. An Accra High Court sentenced him to 20 years’ imprisonment after convicting him on offences related to mining activities on the company’s concession at Samreboi in the Western Region. The sentences for the two counts are to run concurrently.
Wontumi has since appealed both his conviction and sentence, with his lawyers filing the appeal at the Court of Appeal on July 28, 2026, challenging the High Court’s ruling.
