Taifa Gas Terminal At Dongo Kundu Nears Completion As Senators Inspect Project In Mombasa
The Senate Standing Committee on Energy has inspected the KSh 16 billion Taifa Gas liquefied petroleum gas facility under construction at Dongo Kundu, Mombasa County.
The inspection was conducted on Saturday, 24th October 2026, as part of the Committee’s oversight of investments aimed at expanding LPG access and strengthening Kenya’s energy infrastructure.
The Committee is chaired by Elgeyo Marakwet Senator William Kisang.
According to information shared with the Committee during the visit, the 30,000-metric-tonne storage terminal is about 85 per cent complete and is expected to be commissioned in the first quarter of 2027.
The terminal comprises 12 tanks of 2,500 metric tonnes each and is expected to become one of the largest LPG import facilities in East Africa once completed.
Senator Kisang said the investment has the potential to strengthen the LPG supply chain, support the transition to clean cooking, and reduce pressure on existing import infrastructure.
He noted that it is important for the project to be completed within the stated timelines and to operate within all safety and regulatory requirements.
Taifa Gas is a Tanzanian firm that has been operating since 2005. The company runs a 7,500-metric-tonne facility and 21 filling stations in Tanzania.
The Mombasa terminal marks its entry into the Kenyan market. The company is also developing 10 filling and collection points across the country, which are reported to be about 60 per cent complete.
The collection points are located in Kericho, Rangwe, Gilgil, Lukenya, Meru, Mariakani, Garissa and Bungoma, and are expected to be supplied daily by truck from the coast once operational.
General Manager Jamal Humwel said the company is developing filling and collection points across the country so that LPG imported through Mombasa can reach consumers more efficiently.
The project is expected to create about 200 direct jobs and some 90,000 indirect jobs, with roughly three people engaged for every cylinder sold, according to information shared during the inspection.
Committee member Senator (Dr.) Boni Khalwale welcomed the project, saying it shows what is possible when African investment is directed towards strategic infrastructure.
He said the Committee’s interest is to see that the investment delivers affordable LPG to households, creates jobs for Members of the Committee were also informed that the terminal secured approvals from NEMA, the Kenya Ports Authority, Mombasa County, the Director of Physical Planning, EPRA and the National Construction Authority before construction began.
The visit formed part of the Committee’s retreat with the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum on LPG infrastructure, petroleum reserves, rural electrification and fuel pricing.
The Ministry of Energy and Petroleum has been working with stakeholders to expand access to clean cooking solutions as part of Kenya’s energy transition agenda.
What impact do you think the Taifa Gas terminal at Dongo Kundu will have on LPG prices and clean cooking in Kenya?
