Nairobi Water Shutdown: Residents in These Estates to Go Without Water

Residents in several Nairobi estates are expected to experience water shortages for approximately three days following an emergency shutdown of a major pipeline serving the capital.

The Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company (NCWSC) has announced that the interruption will begin at 11:59 p.m. on Monday, October 26, 2026, and is expected to end at 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, October 29.

The shutdown will allow the Athi Water Works Development Agency (AWWDA) to carry out urgent repairs on the NCT–Kigoro–Gigiri–Kabete pipeline.

According to the notice, the water interruption will affect several residential and commercial areas across Nairobi, including Lavington, Kileleshwa, Kilimani, Riverside, Ngong Road, Kibera, Lang’ata, Karen, Nairobi West and Madaraka.

Other affected areas include Southlands, Parklands, Westlands, Waiyaki Way, Uthiru, Kangemi, Ngara, Muthaiga and parts of Kabete.

The disruption is expected to affect households, businesses and other water users within the areas supplied by the pipeline. However, the extent of the shortage may vary depending on individual locations and available water reserves.

The shutdown is necessary to allow emergency maintenance work on the pipeline, which forms part of the infrastructure used to supply water to Nairobi and surrounding areas.

The Athi Water Works Development Agency is responsible for developing and managing major water infrastructure, while Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company handles water distribution to customers within the city.

With the shutdown expected to last about 72 hours, residents in the affected neighbourhoods are advised to store enough water before the interruption begins.

Households should prioritise essential needs such as drinking, cooking, cleaning and personal hygiene. Businesses that depend heavily on water may also need to make temporary arrangements to continue operating during the repair period.

Residents are further advised to use stored water carefully while waiting for normal supply to resume.

Water restoration is expected after the repair works are completed, although the return of supply to individual estates may depend on the recovery of the distribution network.

Affected residents should therefore prepare for possible shortages throughout the announced shutdown period, which runs from late Monday night to late Thursday night.
