Benson Mhlongo Predicts Mandla Ncikazi Could Return to Orlando Pirates as Head Coach

Former Orlando Pirates assistant coach Benson Mhlongo believes Mandla Ncikazi could one day return to the Soweto giants, this time in the role of head coach.

Ncikazi recently left Pirates to take charge of Lamontville Golden Arrows, beginning a new chapter in his coaching career. His departure comes after a successful spell with the Buccaneers, where he was part of the technical team that enjoyed considerable success.

Mhlongo believes the move to Golden Arrows could be an important step in Ncikazi’s development as a coach. In his view, assistant coaches eventually need opportunities to lead their own teams, implement their football philosophies and make independent decisions.

Speaking about the importance of career progression, Mhlongo pointed to coaches such as Rulani Mokwena, explaining that taking charge of a team allows a coach to demonstrate his abilities beyond the responsibilities of an assistant.

He also suggested that pursuing a head coaching position can be a better option than remaining in an assistant role and potentially becoming frustrated by limited opportunities.

According to Mhlongo, Ncikazi’s return to Golden Arrows is particularly significant because of his previous relationship with the KwaZulu-Natal club. The coach worked at Arrows before moving to Pirates, making his latest appointment a return to familiar surroundings.

Mhlongo believes Ncikazi has a responsibility to help the club through its current difficulties, with the immediate challenge being to improve its position and avoid the threat of relegation.

He also expressed confidence that Ncikazi could eventually return to Pirates as a head coach, although no such appointment has been announced.

During his time at Orlando Pirates, Ncikazi was part of a technical team that reportedly won nine trophies. His contribution was also acknowledged by club chairman Irvin Khoza, who supported his ambition to pursue head coaching opportunities.

For now, Ncikazi’s focus will be on his new responsibilities at Golden Arrows. Whether he eventually returns to Pirates remains uncertain, but Mhlongo believes the possibility should not be ruled out.

If Ncikazi proves himself in his new role, a future return to the Buccaneers could become a talking point once again.
