Security company warns Midrand residents against leaving doors open in heatwave
Midrand residents are urged to remain vigilant and strengthen home security as warmer weather across the country may tempt people to leave doors and windows open at night.
Ria Sebetsa Security Services operations director Dillon Maduray warned residents against compromising home security to keep cool, saying unsecured entry points create opportunities for criminals.

“With the current heatwave making conditions particularly uncomfortable at night, we understand that many residents may be tempted to leave doors and windows open while sleeping,” said Maduray.
However, he cautioned that leaving homes unsecured increases the risk of house burglaries, urging residents to prioritise the safety of their properties, families and belongings.
Maduray encouraged residents to remain alert and take preventative measures, particularly during the warmer months when keeping homes ventilated can become a challenge.
“Let us work together to protect our homes, families and community during these challenging weather conditions,” he said.
Ria Sebetsa advised residents to take several precautions to improve home security during the hot season.
Residents are encouraged to keep doors and accessible windows locked, particularly when going to bed or leaving their homes unattended. Those with alarm systems should ensure these are functioning correctly and activated when appropriate, including at night.

Maduray also urged residents with outdoor security beams to ensure they are activated during both the day and night, in accordance with their security arrangements. He advised that these measures should be maintained even when residents are at home.
“Residents should also remain alert to suspicious behaviour and unfamiliar activity in their neighbourhoods, reporting concerns promptly to their security providers or the relevant authorities,” said Maduray.
To manage the heat without compromising safety, Ria Sebetsa recommends using secure ventilation options that allow fresh air into homes while limiting unauthorised access.
Maduray emphasised that simple, consistent security measures could help reduce opportunities for criminals and urged residents to remain vigilant throughout the summer season.
