Kalonzo Reveals Stand on Joining Ruto’s Government

The Wiper Party leader made the remarks on October 25, after visiting former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua at his Wamunyoro home, a meeting that sparked fresh speculation about political realignments within the opposition.

In a statement shared on social media, Kalonzo said his relationship with Gachagua had grown since the former Deputy President’s impeachment and described their interactions as those of friends and political allies.

“Since the impeachment of H.E. Rigathi Gachagua, he and I have stood together as friends and allies,” Kalonzo said.

He noted that Gachagua had previously visited his Muuna home in Tseikuru, Kitui County, adding that nothing was unusual about his returning the gesture.

“My brother Rigathi has been to my Muuna home in Tseikuru. Now I have been to his in Wamunyoro. What is wrong with friends and cousins visiting one another?” he asked.

Kalonzo’s remarks come against the backdrop of a series of opposition meetings that have brought together key figures seeking to forge a common front against President Ruto ahead of the next election.

In May 2025, Gachagua joined Kalonzo and other opposition leaders at the Wiper leader’s Tseikuru home for talks aimed at strengthening cooperation among government critics.

The former Vice President claimed that critics were deliberately misrepresenting his engagement with Gachagua because they feared a united opposition movement.

“What worries the predator regime is not a visit between friends and cousins. It is a united alternative government in waiting,” he said.

Kalonzo further accused unnamed government allies of sponsoring propaganda intended to create divisions within opposition ranks.

He urged Kenyans to ignore such narratives and instead focus on efforts to build a strong coalition capable of challenging the Kenya Kwanza administration.

The Wiper leader said bringing together opposition figures remains a key priority and pledged to continue consultations with leaders across the political divide.

Efforts to unite the opposition ahead of the 2027 General Election have centred on identifying a single candidate to face President William Ruto.

Several opposition figures have emerged as potential contenders, among them Kalonzo Musyoka, former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Martha Karua and Edwin Sifuna.

Consultations have taken place through a series of meetings involving opposition leaders and their allies, including sessions held at Gachagua’s Wamunyoro residence and Kalonzo’s Muuna home in Tseikuru.

The leaders have publicly committed themselves to working together and avoiding a fragmented contest in 2027.

Kalonzo has repeatedly argued that the opposition should prioritise unity over individual ambitions, while other leaders have maintained that discussions on the coalition’s flag bearer will be resolved through consensus.

A Politrack Africa poll released on October 1, 2026, placed President William Ruto first in the 2027 presidential race with 45.1 per cent support.

Edwin Sifuna ranked second with 19.6 per cent, while Kalonzo Musyoka came third with 10.3 per cent.

Fred Matiang’i followed with 7.2 percent, and Rigathi Gachagua with 6.0 percent.

Among other potential candidates, George Wajackoyah polled 1.1 per cent, while Martha Karua and David Maraga each recorded 0.8 per cent.

James Orengo received 0.4 per cent and Jimmy Wanjigi 0.3 per cent.

The survey also found that 8.4 per cent of respondents were undecided.

Conducted between September 15 and 25, 2026, the poll sampled 20,419 respondents nationwide through a text-based platform and reported a 95 per cent confidence level with a margin of error of plus or minus three percentage points.
