26-Year-Old Nigerian Student Dies From Asthma Attack Shortly After Completing UK Master’s Degree
According to a report by Vanguard on Sunday, October 25, 2026, a 26-year-old Nigerian student, Obanyeli Jesse Chima, has died in London after suffering a severe asthma attack shortly after completing his master’s degree in Public Health.
Chima was reportedly waiting in a lounge to meet friends for a joint birthday celebration when he developed breathing difficulties. He told his friends he needed to step outside for fresh air. However, his condition worsened rapidly despite using three inhalers.
One of his friends called an ambulance when his condition deteriorated. Chima collapsed while she was still speaking to the emergency operator. His friends immediately began performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation under the operator’s guidance.
Paramedics reportedly spent about two hours trying to stabilise him before rushing him to hospital. He was placed on life support, and doctors initially hoped he might recover with memory loss. However, tests conducted two days later confirmed that he was brain-dead after showing no improvement.
Chima, a passionate Chelsea FC supporter who had previously worked at the club, leaves behind three siblings in Nigeria. His friend, Eva, said his family had been saving money to travel to London for his graduation. The funds might now be needed to transport his remains to Nigeria for burial. His friends are raising money to help bring his body home so his family can give him a proper burial.
