Mtito Andei Horror Sparks Bold Proposal to Keep Trailers Away From Passenger Buses
The deadly collision near Mtito Andei has reignited difficult questions about safety on Kenya’s busiest highways, with the Motorists Association of Kenya calling for heavy commercial trailers and long-distance passenger buses to be separated.
The demand follows a devastating crash at Kanga, near Mtito Andei, along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway on Sunday morning, October 25, 2026.
The collision involved a passenger bus belonging to The Power of the Word Church International and a lorry, leaving at least 22 people dead and several others injured.
According to the association, the tragedy should serve as a turning point in how Kenya manages traffic on the Nairobi-Mombasa corridor.
MAK wants authorities to urgently explore ways of keeping heavy commercial trucks away from routes heavily used by long-distance passenger vehicles.
The group has also renewed calls for the long-awaited expansion of the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway into a dual carriageway.
Such an upgrade, it argues, would reduce dangerous interactions between vehicles travelling in opposite directions and create safer conditions for motorists and passengers.
The association further wants the government to make greater use of the Standard Gauge Railway for transporting cargo.
With the railway already serving parts of the Mombasa-Naivasha corridor, MAK argues that shifting more freight from roads to rail could reduce the number of heavy trucks using the highway.
The latest tragedy has added urgency to concerns that have followed a series of deadly crashes along the busy route.
Earlier this month, 17 pilgrims died in another accident along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway, intensifying calls for stronger road-safety measures.
Preliminary findings by the National Transport and Safety Authority indicated that improper overtaking may have contributed to the Mtito Andei collision, although investigations are still underway to establish the precise circumstances surrounding the crash.
The accident has therefore placed renewed attention on driver behaviour, road design, traffic management and the condition of vehicles using the highway.
For families who lost loved ones, however, the debate over infrastructure and regulation comes after an irreversible loss.
The tragedy has once again demonstrated the devastating consequences that can occur when heavy commercial traffic and passenger vehicles share a busy two-way highway.
As investigations continue, the Motorists Association’s proposals have placed pressure on authorities to move beyond condolences and enforcement campaigns and pursue longer-term measures that could prevent another Mtito Andei tragedy.
