“I Know Him as a Fairly Intelligent Person;” CS John Mbadi Says Sifuna Will Not Run in 2027
National Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi has dismissed Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s chances in the 2027 General Election, saying he would lose badly if elections were held today and President William Ruto would be re-elected.
Mbadi made the remarks on Sunday, October 25, 2026, at a time when Sifuna’s presidential ambitions are gaining attention within the opposition.
“If elections were held today, I don’t know how many votes Sifuna will get, but I know he will lose badly. In fact, I don’t think he will run; I know him as a fairly intelligent person,” the CS said.
His comments cast doubt not only on Sifuna’s chances of winning but also on whether the senator will eventually enter the presidential race. By describing Sifuna as a fairly intelligent person, Mbadi suggested that the senator would realize the challenge ahead and back out before the contest begins.
The remarks come days after DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua held talks with Linda Mwananchi leaders led by Sifuna.
DCP Deputy Party Leader Cleophas Malala has said the party agreed to support Sifuna’s presidential bid. The party is also expected to meet Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka to persuade him to back the senator, a move that could shape how the opposition settles on its flagbearer.
Mbadi’s statement is therefore being read as a direct response to the growing push to rally the opposition behind Sifuna. It also shows how the government side is already sharpening its attack on the senator as the political temperature rises ahead of 2027.
Supporters of the Linda Mwananchi movement are likely to dispute the CS’s assessment. They see Sifuna as one of the most visible opposition voices, particularly among younger and urban voters, and believe his candidature could change the political equation.
For now, Sifuna has not responded to Mbadi’s remarks. With the election still months away, the exchange is expected to be one of many as both sides trade blows over who has the upper hand in the race for State House.
