Kwasi Sibo’s Al Swehly knocked out of CAF Champions League on penalties by Esperance

According to a report by Ghanaweb on Sunday, October 25, 2026, Ghana midfielder Kwasi Sibo will not feature in the group stage of this season’s CAF Champions League after his Libyan side, Al Swehly, lost on penalties to Tunisia’s Espérance de Tunis in the second round of the preliminary stage.

Al Swehly travelled to Tunis for Saturday’s return leg holding a narrow 1-0 advantage from the first leg in Libya. That cushion did not last. Imad Faraj put the hosts ahead on the night in the eighth minute, and with no further goals, the match ended 1-0 in Espérance’s favour. The tie was level at 1-1 on aggregate and went to a shootout.

The shootout proved decisive. Al Swehly converted only one of their four penalties, while Espérance scored three of their four, enough to send the Tunisian giants through. A tie that had been separated by a single goal in each leg was ultimately settled from the spot.

Espérance now move into the group phase of Africa’s premier club competition, with the draw scheduled to take place in Cairo next week. For Al Swehly, the result ends their hopes of reaching the group stage, even though they left the first leg with the lead.

Sibo is expected to keep his focus on helping the Libyan club meet their objectives for the rest of the season. The former Real Oviedo midfielder could, however, soon return to the international stage. He is reportedly targeting a place in Ghana’s squad for next month’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Somalia.

The Black Stars will be looking to improve their position in the qualifying campaign as they chase a place at the tournament.
