What Ruto Stands to Lose: How a Resurgent Gideon Threatens the Rift’s Voting Block
KANU Chairman Gideon Moi has reopened the battle for the Rift Valley. Speaking to Kalenjin elders at his Kabarak home, Moi publicly severed ties with President William Ruto, accusing him of breaking a strategic agreement struck a year ago.
The fallout follows a broken truce under which Moi withdrew from the Baringo senatorial by-election to support the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA). In exchange, the administration promised to complete stalled infrastructure projects, including regional roads and water dams. Expressing regret to his community for trusting those assurances, Moi declared an independent political path.
Moi’s resurgence poses a direct threat to President Ruto’s political foundation. The Rift Valley represents the country’s single largest voting hub, recording 671,958 newly registered voters in recent Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) updates.
Any fracture in the Kalenjin vote deprives the President of his guaranteed regional baseline. In a close national contest, even a minor drop in voter turnout or a split in loyalty across Baringo, Nakuru, and Samburu counties threatens Ruto’s re-election cushion.
Furthermore, an active KANU opposition inside the Rift Valley grants national opposition coalitions a formidable foothold in the President’s home backyard. By challenging the administration on unfulfilled promises and economic hardship, Gideon Moi complicates Ruto’s ability to project complete regional unity ahead of 2027.
