Kpebu Says Cost Of Living Remains High Despite Economic Stability

According to a report by 3News on Saturday, October 24, 2026, private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has acknowledged improvements in Ghana’s economic stability under Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson but expressed concerns about the continued high cost of living and transport fares.

Speaking on TV3’s The Key Points programme, Kpebu said the economy had generally stabilised under President John Dramani Mahama’s administration. However, he stressed that the reported improvements had not eliminated the financial difficulties many Ghanaians continue to experience in their daily lives.

He noted that high living expenses and transport costs remain significant concerns for households struggling to manage their budgets. His comments highlight the distinction between improvements in overall economic stability and the direct impact of economic conditions on ordinary citizens.

Kpebu also criticised the arrest of individuals over comments directed at the government, arguing that restrictions on freedom of expression could undermine public confidence in the administration. He maintained that Ghanaians value their right to express opinions and criticise political leaders, suggesting that attempts to limit these freedoms could generate dissatisfaction.

Discussing the 2028 general election, Kpebu predicted that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) would retain power but experience a significant decline in its share of the votes compared with its performance in the 2024 elections. His assessment came amid discussions about the party’s internal elections, leadership arrangements and future electoral strategy.

Meanwhile, Hamza Suhuyini, a member of the NDC Communications Team, defended the government’s record, arguing that its first two years in office should not be compared directly with the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration’s eight years in power.

Suhuyini was responding to former Information Minister Fatimatu Abubakar, who predicted that NPP flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia would win the 2028 presidential election regardless of whom the NDC selected as its candidate. Abubakar based her assessment on what she described as shortcomings in the current administration and the previous government’s record.

Suhuyini also acknowledged that the NDC would miss the institutional knowledge and experience of its National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, who is not seeking re-election. He indicated that the party was working to address the gap his departure could create.

The NDC has closed nominations for its 2026 National Executive Elections, with 137 prospective aspirants collecting nomination forms for 14 positions. Completed forms are scheduled to be submitted between November 7 and 9, 2026, at the party’s headquarters in Adabraka, Accra.

The developments highlight the political and economic issues likely to shape discussions as Ghana’s major parties prepare for their next electoral contest.
