Another Senior ANC Member Has Announced His Resignation From The Party
ANC Cape Town Leader Ndithini Tyhido Resigns as Councillor Ahead of Local Government Elections
African National Congress (ANC) leader in the City of Cape Town, Ndithini Tyhido, has resigned as a councillor just days before the upcoming local government elections, according to a report by Eyewitness News published on Saturday, 24 October.
Tyhido’s resignation comes amid a pending disciplinary process initiated by the Democratic Alliance (DA)-led city council over allegations that he failed to attend council-related meetings. However, he has denied that the proceedings influenced his decision, maintaining that he wants to concentrate on campaigning for the ANC.
According to Eyewitness News, Tyhido said he had never been formally charged with failing to attend council or council committee meetings. He acknowledged that disciplinary proceedings had been initiated over his alleged failure to attend virtual subcouncil meetings but argued that different rules applied to such meetings.
The ANC leader accused the DA of using the matter to embarrass him politically, describing the disciplinary process as politically motivated. He said he was unwilling to waste time on what he considered an unnecessary dispute when he could focus on mobilising support for his party ahead of the elections.
Tyhido has been a prominent figure in the ANC’s opposition to the DA-led administration in Cape Town. He assumed the position of metro caucus leader in 2025 following the resignation of Banele Majingo, who subsequently left the ANC and joined the DA.
During his tenure, Tyhido frequently criticised the municipal administration over service delivery, housing, infrastructure and concerns affecting working-class communities.
His departure comes at a crucial moment for the ANC as it seeks to strengthen its campaign and mobilise voters ahead of the municipal elections. Although he is leaving his councillor position, his statements suggest he intends to remain actively involved in the party’s political activities.
The allegations surrounding his attendance and the pending disciplinary process have further highlighted tensions between the ANC and the DA in Cape Town. However, Tyhido’s accusations do not establish that the proceedings were unlawful.
Attention will now turn to how the ANC manages the leadership transition while continuing its election campaign.
