Kaizer Motaung Jr Backs Da Cruz After Chiefs’ Early Exit

Kaizer Chiefs sporting director Kaizer Motaung Jr has reiterated the club’s backing for head coach Fernando Da Cruz and the technical staff after the team’s early exit from the CAF Confederation Cup.

The Soweto club faced elimination at the hands of Zambia’s Red Arrows on Friday, losing 3-2 in a penalty shootout. Although Chiefs managed to win the second leg 1-0 thanks to a header from Bradley Cross, the aggregate score ended in a 1-1 draw, as the Zambians had won the first leg by the same margin.

In an announcement made through the club’s official channels, Motaung Jr recognized the disappointment experienced by fans, players, and staff following this continental loss. Nonetheless, he emphasized that this outcome would not alter the club’s dedication to its long-term sporting strategy.

“As a Club, we want to reaffirm our unwavering support for and trust in the Head Coach and the entire technical team,” said Motaung Jr.

He commended the coaching staff for their professionalism, commitment, and efforts to enhance the team, asserting that the club remains confident in its football philosophy and development pathway for achieving sustainable success.

Motaung Jr also acknowledged the players’ efforts, despite the disappointing result and ongoing injuries affecting the roster. He emphasized that the team continues to show determination in striving to meet the club’s high standards.

The sporting director highlighted the importance of evaluating progress over time instead of focusing solely on one outcome. He mentioned that the club would review the performance, identify areas for improvement, and make necessary adjustments while maintaining stability within the football department.

Despite generating several chances during the second leg, Chiefs could not secure the crucial goal needed for qualification before the penalty shootout. Head coach Da Cruz later admitted that the team had missed opportunities to score.

This elimination concludes Chiefs’ continental journey earlier than anticipated, allowing them to shift their focus to their remaining domestic matches.

Motaung Jr expressed gratitude to the supporters for their ongoing loyalty and urged unity as the club aims to bounce back from this setback.
