They are not real asylum seekers: Shivambu exposes the truth about foreigners flooding SA

In an interview with Newzroom Afrika, Afrika Mayibuye leader Floyd Shivambu harshly criticised the country’s immigration system, saying that most undocumented people entering South Africa are seeking economic opportunities rather than true asylum. According to Shivambu, there needs to be proper legal oversight to prevent the massive influx of people seeking better economic opportunities from putting a strain on public resources, local job markets, and social infrastructure, even though international conventions protect those fleeing political persecution, war, or humanitarian catastrophes.

To elaborate, Shivambu said that, in comparison to global standards, South Africa’s entrance methods are unusually lax or inadequately implemented. Noting the serious internal concerns posed by unrestrained migrations, he insisted that no sovereign state in the world consistently accepts huge influxes of socioeconomic migrants without proper documents, work permits, or professional approvals. The head of the Afrika Mayibuye group claims that these vulnerabilities are exacerbated by open borders and insufficient state capacity, which allows unregulated growth of informal enterprises and strains public service delivery systems caused by people that have not been enumerated.

The comments show that a number of new political formations and civic organisations are coming together on the critical need to rethink policies related to border control and national security. The fact that immigration has become a pivotal point of political contention was brought home by Shivambu’s clear differentiation between verified economic migration and humanitarian protection. Political players from all sides are under growing pressure to address the serious security, socioeconomic, and housing concerns associated with strict immigration enforcement as cities deal with high unemployment, housing shortages, and stretched municipal finances.
