National Police Service Announces Major Traffic Disruptions in Nairobi
The National Police Service has announced a major traffic disruption in Nairobi following the planned closure of the Nairobi Southern Bypass to facilitate the 23rd edition of the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon.
In a notice issued on Saturday, October 24, 2026, the police said the Southern Bypass would be completely closed from midnight on Saturday until 3:00 pm on Sunday, October 25, 2026.
The closure will affect the entire section between the Ole Sereni Interchange and Kikuyu Town. Partial closures and security restrictions will also be imposed on sections of Lang’ata Road and Ngong Road near Uhuru Gardens and Nairobi National Park.
The police have urged motorists to plan their journeys in advance and use alternative routes to avoid delays during the marathon.
According to the National Police Service, motorists travelling from Mombasa Road and the Inland Container Depot (ICD) will be diverted to Mombasa Road and Uhuru Highway towards Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD).
Drivers approaching from Western Kenya and the Kikuyu Bypass will be directed to use James Gichuru Road or Waiyaki Way to access the CBD and Mombasa Road.
Motorists travelling from Lang’ata and Karen will face restricted access to the Southern Bypass. They have been advised to use Lang’ata Road, Dagoretti Road and Ngong Road, depending on their destinations.
Meanwhile, drivers travelling from the Lenana area along Ngong Road towards Kikuyu have been advised to use Waiyaki Way through Naivasha Road or James Gichuru Road.
Those heading towards Mombasa Road from the same area will be required to use Lang’ata Road through Karen Road.
The National Police Service said it was working with relevant government agencies to ensure smooth traffic flow and the successful hosting of the marathon.
Police officers and marshals will be stationed along affected routes to guide motorists and enforce traffic regulations throughout the closure period.
The service has called on road users to remain patient, follow instructions issued by traffic officers and marshals, and strictly observe all traffic rules.
It also warned that stern action would be taken against motorists found violating traffic regulations during the period.
The Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon is a major sporting event that attracts participants and spectators to the capital. The temporary road closures are intended to facilitate the event and manage the movement of runners and other road users.
Motorists using the affected routes have been advised to allow extra travel time and follow the designated diversions until normal traffic operations resume on Sunday afternoon.
