Even If You Repackage Bawumia Ghanaians Will Still Reject Him—Top NDC Guru Warns
A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communications Team, Hamza Suhuyini, has argued that former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia could be the biggest obstacle to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) efforts to return to government in the 2028 general elections.
Mr Suhuyini maintains that changing Dr Bawumia’s public image or presenting him in a new political light may not be enough to convince Ghanaians to support his presidential ambitions.
His comments reflect the NDC communicator’s doubts about the former vice president’s ability to win over voters following his defeat in the 2024 presidential election.
The remarks were made during a discussion on TV3’s The Key Points programme on Saturday, October 24, 2026, amid a broader debate over the NPP’s chances of reclaiming power and the performance of the current NDC administration.
Mr Suhuyini has repeatedly questioned Dr Bawumia’s credibility and leadership record. In earlier public comments, he argued that the former vice president needed to address concerns about his record in office rather than rely solely on efforts to reshape his political image.
The NDC communicator has also previously expressed confidence that his party could defeat Dr Bawumia again if the NPP selected him as its presidential candidate. In June 2025, he argued that the NDC would have to continue working to persuade voters rather than become complacent following its electoral victory.
Dr Bawumia, who led the NPP into the 2024 presidential election, is seeking to lead the party in another attempt to win the presidency in 2028.
The debate over his candidacy has centred on whether his experience as former vice president and his previous leadership of the government’s Economic Management Team will help him regain public confidence or present challenges for the opposition party.
Mr Suhuyini’s latest assessment suggests that the NPP may struggle to return to power if it fails to address the concerns he believes could undermine Dr Bawumia’s appeal to voters.
However, the ultimate outcome of the 2028 election will depend on several factors, including the records of both major political parties, their campaign strategies and the decisions Ghanaian voters make at the polls.
