Former Chiefs Midfielder Questions Signings and Calls for Fernando Da Cruz to Leave

Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Thabiso Malatsi has criticised the club’s recent recruitment and called for head coach Fernando Da Cruz to be released from his position, expressing doubts about the team’s direction and chances of winning silverware.

Malatsi believes that Chiefs have not done enough to strengthen their squad with quality players and has singled out Langelihle Phili as the signing who has impressed him the most. According to the former midfielder, the club needs to bring in more players of Phili’s quality if they want to compete consistently and challenge for major trophies.

Speaking about the club’s recruitment, Malatsi said: “Phili is the only signing that they managed to find, if we can get 11 signings like Langelihle Phili, then Chiefs can be good.”

His comments reflect concerns about whether the players brought into the squad have made the expected difference. Chiefs supporters have been hoping to see the club build a competitive team capable of challenging for domestic honours, but inconsistent performances have increased the pressure on the technical team.

For Malatsi, improving the squad requires more than simply signing new players. He believes Chiefs need footballers who can make an immediate impact and raise the overall standard of the team.

The former midfielder also turned his attention to Da Cruz, questioning the coach’s approach and suggesting that he is struggling to find solutions to the team’s problems.

Malatsi compared the current situation to the period under former Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi, arguing that he sees similar concerns in the team’s mentality and tactical direction.

“It’s the same mentality as Nabi, you can see he is running out of ideas, I think they should just release him,” Malatsi said.

The statement represents a strong criticism of Da Cruz, who faces the challenge of improving results and restoring confidence among supporters. Coaches at a club as big as Kaizer Chiefs are often judged by their performances, and disappointing results can quickly increase pressure on the technical team.

Malatsi’s criticism also extended to the club’s hopes in the Carling Knockout competition. Rather than expressing confidence that Chiefs could win the tournament, he admitted that his optimism had disappeared.

“My hope is gone, I don’t have any hope,” he said.

His comments highlight the frustration surrounding the club as supporters continue to wait for consistent performances and meaningful progress.

However, Chiefs still have the responsibility of responding on the pitch. Better results, improved teamwork and more effective use of the available players could help change the mood around the club.

The criticism from Malatsi adds to the debate about whether Chiefs should continue with their current technical leadership or consider making changes. Ultimately, the club’s management will have to assess the team’s performances, recruitment decisions and long-term plans before deciding on the best way forward.
