Sarkodie’s Baba Yara Stadium Concert: Sports Authorities Urged to Protect Football Pitch

Authorities responsible for managing Ghana’s sporting facilities have been urged to take serious precautions ahead of Sarkodie’s upcoming show at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi to prevent possible damage to the football pitch and other parts of the facility.

The concerns have centred on the need to balance entertainment activities with the protection of important national sporting infrastructure. Baba Yara Sports Stadium is one of Ghana’s major football venues and plays a significant role in hosting domestic matches and other sporting events.

Those raising concerns about the planned concert argue that while Kumasi deserves major entertainment events, such activities should not compromise the condition of a facility that serves thousands of football fans and supports the development of sports in the country.

The Ministry of Sports and Recreation, the National Sports Authority (NSA) and other relevant stakeholders have therefore been urged to ensure that appropriate measures are put in place before the event takes place.

One key recommendation is to protect the playing surface from heavy equipment, foot traffic and other activities that could damage the grass. Organisers could also consider restricting access to the pitch entirely, where practical, while using designated areas for performances and audience activities.

The concerns have also drawn comparisons with Shatta Wale’s recent Shatta Fest at the Accra Sports Stadium, with calls for the level of organisation and discipline associated with that event to be encouraged at other stadium concerts.

Large entertainment events can attract thousands of people and require careful planning, particularly when they take place at venues designed primarily for sporting activities. Without adequate safeguards, the movement of equipment, temporary installations and large crowds can place pressure on playing surfaces and stadium infrastructure.

For Baba Yara Sports Stadium, protecting the pitch is especially important because restoring damaged grass can require considerable time, maintenance and financial resources.

The authorities and event organisers are therefore being encouraged to work together to establish clear rules governing the use of the facility.

Ultimately, the message is that entertainment and sports can coexist, provided that proper planning and protective measures are prioritised. Kumasi can host major musical performances without sacrificing the long-term condition of one of Ghana’s important sporting venues.
