Minority is demanding President Mahama to sack Sammy Gyamfi from GoldBod immediately
The Minority Caucus in Parliament has called on President John Dramani Mahama to immediately dismiss Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi over comments concerning illegal small-scale mining.
In a statement dated October 23, 2026, the Minority accused Mr Gyamfi of making remarks that appeared to suggest that miners could operate without valid licences if their activities were outside protected forests, water bodies and other restricted areas.
The caucus described the alleged comments as irresponsible, arguing that they could undermine Ghana’s efforts to combat illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
The statement was signed by Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong, Member of Parliament for Mampong and Ranking Member of Parliament’s Lands and Natural Resources Committee.
The Minority is demanding Mr Gyamfi’s immediate removal, a public apology and sanctions over the controversy. It has also called for an audit of GoldBod’s gold-purchasing records to strengthen transparency and traceability in the gold trade.
Additionally, the caucus wants the government to outline a clear strategy for tackling illegal mining and strengthen measures to protect Ghana’s forests, water bodies and farmlands.
However, the Ghana National Association of Small Scale Miners has defended Mr Gyamfi, arguing that his comments have been taken out of context. The association said he was discussing plans to formalise eligible miners and bring their operations under proper regulatory supervision.
The controversy has renewed public debate over the government’s approach to illegal mining and the enforcement of licensing requirements.
As of October 24, 2026, reports on the dispute have not confirmed any presidential decision to remove Mr Gyamfi from office.
