“Pakistanis Have Shown Us That South Africans Are Not Organized” – Former MP Ndlozi
Former Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Member of Parliament Mbuyiseni Ndlozi has sparked discussion after arguing that foreign nationals operating spaza shops have demonstrated the importance of business organisation and collective buying.
Ndlozi reportedly pointed to Pakistani shop owners as an example, saying their ability to organise themselves, purchase goods in bulk and offer competitive prices gives them an advantage in the retail sector.
“The Pakistanis, you know what they do, they are organised, they buy in bulk, they are able to beat the prices,” Ndlozi said.
He contrasted this approach with what he described as a tendency among South Africans to compete against one another rather than work together to strengthen their businesses.
According to Ndlozi, the success of some foreign-owned spaza shops offers a lesson about cooperation, purchasing power and the importance of developing sustainable business strategies.
He argued that even if foreign shop owners were removed from the local market, the underlying challenge of poor organisation among South African entrepreneurs would remain.
“All they are saying to us, even if niyabaxosha kusasa, they have exposed that you are not organised,” he reportedly said.
His comments come amid ongoing debates in South Africa about foreign-owned businesses, local economic participation and competition in the informal retail sector.
The remarks have drawn attention to whether local entrepreneurs could improve their competitiveness through cooperatives, bulk purchasing and stronger business networks.
Ndlozi’s argument shifts the focus towards business practices and collective economic empowerment rather than simply the nationality of shop owners.
