“I Waited and Waited”: Gideon Moi Breaks Silence, Accuses Ruto of Failing to Honour Deal
KANU chairman Gideon Moi has broken his silence on his strained relationship with President William Ruto, accusing the Head of State of failing to honour promises he says were made during their political negotiations last year. Moi claims the agreement was meant to secure development projects for Baringo County residents, but the commitments remain unfulfilled.
Speaking during a meeting with Kalenjin elders at his Kabarak home in Nakuru County on Friday, October 23, 2026, Moi revisited the circumstances surrounding his decision to withdraw from the Baringo senatorial by-election in 2025. He said his move was influenced by assurances he believed would benefit the people he represented.
According to Moi, his discussions with Ruto were not about securing personal favours or political rewards. Instead, he wanted the government to address development needs in Baringo, including projects he said had remained unfinished.
“In everything, I didn’t ask for a personal thing,” Moi said, explaining that his requests were focused on specific projects for the people of Baringo rather than his own interests.
The KANU leader further claimed that the implementation of the agreement was repeatedly postponed. He said the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga became one of the reasons given for delaying the discussions, leaving him waiting for a resolution that had yet to materialise.
“Wait for some time, we finish this matter,” Moi recalled Ruto telling him. He added that he continued waiting but had not received the outcome he expected.
The dispute has reopened questions about the political understanding that emerged after the two leaders publicly reconciled in October 2025. Moi subsequently stepped aside from the Baringo Senate race, clearing the way for the ruling United Democratic Alliance candidate to compete without facing him.
Moi also pushed back against Ruto’s previous accusations that he was sponsoring opposition activities through coverage published by the Standard Group media house, which is associated with the Moi family.
Dismissing the claims as distractions, he challenged the President to focus on fulfilling the commitments he says were made instead of linking him to newspaper headlines critical of the government.
The disagreement has now taken a personal turn, with Moi apologising to members of his community and asking Kalenjin elders to forgive him for the political decision he made.
“Please forgive me… my Kalenjin people, I did what I did with a clean heart,” he said, acknowledging the concerns surrounding his decision to cooperate with Ruto.
His remarks signal a possible shift in political direction as Kenya moves closer to the 2027 General Election. However, Moi has not outlined a definitive political plan, leaving questions about whether he will seek a new alliance or pursue a different path.
The latest developments highlight the growing uncertainty surrounding the once-promising relationship between the KANU leader and the President, with the fate of the alleged agreement and the development projects at its centre still in dispute.
