Mosiria Alleges Nairobi Developers Face Sh100 Million Demands as Eastleigh Building Collapses

Former Nairobi County Chief Officer Geoffrey Mosiria has alleged that developers in the capital face demands running into millions of shillings, alongside bribes, to secure construction approvals, raising fresh concerns about corruption and building safety following the Eastleigh collapse.

In a statement shared on Facebook, Mosiria claimed that some developers are asked to pay between KSh56 million and KSh100 million, in addition to alleged bribes, to obtain approvals. He warned that such demands could encourage cost-cutting and potentially expose residents to unsafe structures.

Mosiria also revealed that he had previously intervened to stop construction at night at the Eastleigh building that has now collapsed. He claimed his former boss warned him to keep away from the site, raising questions about the challenges faced by officers seeking to enforce construction regulations.

The former chief officer further recalled an earlier incident involving a development in South C, which he said he had stopped. According to Mosiria, the intervention triggered pressure from senior officials, while two environment officers were suspended.

He believes his actions may have contributed to his subsequent transfer from the Environment Department to Customer Care, a move he interpreted as an attempt to frustrate him into resigning. However, he maintained that he refused to leave his job.

Mosiria has called for urgent inspections of buildings across Nairobi, including occupied properties, by qualified engineers to identify structures that could pose safety risks.

He also appealed to President William Ruto to intervene and protect developers from alleged corruption and harassment, while insisting that those who violate building regulations must face enforcement action.

Mosiria proposed mandatory body cameras for inspection officers during site visits, arguing that the measure would improve accountability and protect both developers and county staff.
