No One Will Be Protected – Fiifi Kwetey Breaks Silence on Obuasi SHTS Abuse Allegations
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has pledged that it will not shield Zakaria Abdulai, the suspended headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School, from the ongoing sexual abuse investigation, according to General Secretary Fiifi Kwetey.
Speaking to journalists on Thursday, Kwetey stated that the party has no intention of interfering with law enforcement processes and will allow the truth to emerge regardless of the accused’s political ties. He emphasized that if Abdulai is found guilty, he will face the full consequences of the law, and if cleared, the party would be pleased for him.
The NDC’s position follows scrutiny over its initial decision to permit Abdulai—who served as the party’s Juaben constituency secretary and had sought the chairmanship position—to contest internal elections despite the allegations. Kwetey explained that the party had not yet accessed the full investigative documentary by journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni when it made that initial call, but reversed its stance after reviewing the comprehensive disclosures.
Kwetey also distanced the party from remarks made by an NDC communications officer who appeared to defend the headmaster, stating that such comments do not represent the party’s values and that the individual had since apologized.
Abdulai faces allegations of sexual misconduct involving multiple female students, brought to public attention through Awuni’s investigation. He has been interdicted by the Ghana Education Service and arrested by police, though he was later granted bail. The case docket concerning one complaint has been forwarded to the Attorney-General for review.
The NDC’s assurance comes amid mounting pressure from groups including the Minority Women’s Caucus in Parliament, which has called for a full independent inquiry into how earlier complaints were handled and whether any political interference delayed action.
